Mail User Guide
In the Mail app on your Mac, if you’re certain you’re not receiving messages, even after clicking the Get Mail button in the Mail toolbar, try these suggestions.

- Check whether Mail is retrieving a large message or a message with large attachments. See View Mail activity.
- Check if you’re using filters in the message list that are preventing expected messages from being shown.
- Try sorting messages in the message list by Date or another attribute, or searching for messages, to verify if you received them.

- If you’re missing emails from a specific person or group, check whether you blocked messages from them.
- Try quitting Mail, then opening it again.
- Choose Window > Connection Doctor, then follow any instructions in the Details column. Check for problems logging in to email accounts or with the incoming mail server, or with firewall software blocking network traffic.Check whether you’re affected by another firewall, such as software installed separately from macOS or built into an internet sharing router, or administered by your email account provider. Contact the appropriate person for information.
- If you’re still having problems, contact your email account provider to verify your user name, password, incoming mail server, and other required information. Then verify the information is entered correctly in Mail account preferences.
Problems viewing messages and mailboxes. If a mailbox is offline. If searching doesn’t find the right emails. If emails aren’t displayed or look strange. If emails appear to be missing. If you can’t open Mail. If messages are in a Recovered Messages mailbox.
- The number of lines of the message to show in the message list. Move discarded messages into. Choose whether to delete a message or move it to the Archive mailbox when you swipe left on a message in the message list. This setting also determines whether you can delete or archive messages from Mail notifications.
- Select a mailbox on the mail server or on your Mac to store deleted messages, or choose None (deleted messages are removed and aren’t available in the Trash mailbox). This option is available only for IMAP accounts. Erase deleted messages. Mail erases deleted messages at the specified time.

Use Mailbox Behaviors preferences in Mail to change where draft, sent, junk, deleted, and archived messages for an email account are stored.
To change these preferences in the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, then click Mailbox Behaviors.
Note: Mail stores messages in the mailbox you specify for each option.
- If you select a mailbox on the mail server, the messages are available when you use your email account on another computer. Mail selects the best mailbox for your account; before choosing a different server mailbox, check with your email account provider.
- If you select an On My Mac mailbox, the messages are stored on your Mac and are available only there.
The settings you see vary depending on your account type.

Erase deleted messages | Mail erases deleted messages at the specified time. Select a setting other than Never to avoid exceeding storage limits set by your email account provider. If you selected None for Trash Mailbox, you can have Mail permanently delete messages automatically. If your email account provider sets up the server to delete older messages, the messages are deleted regardless of how you change this option. |
Archive Mailbox | Select a mailbox on the mail server to store archived messages. |
